Outsourcing, (ghost writing and contract cheating) considered one of the most egregious forms of academic dishonesty and misconduct, presents a significant challenge to the integrity and reputation of higher education institutions globally. This practice undermines the quality and standards of tertiary education worldwide. In recent years, our nation has witnessed the emergence of a black market for thesis writing, with this phenomenon becoming increasingly prevalent over the past two years. Despite the gravity of this issue, limited research has been conducted in this area. This study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing thematic analysis to examine a sample of 13 postgraduate students from universities and higher education institutions in Isfahan who had completely outsourced their thesis writing. The analysis of the data revealed six primary themes: "thesis as a meaningless matter," "challenging daily life," "culture of cheating," "communication disorder," "learning challenges," and "decline of scientific values." The findings indicate that to comprehend students' motivations for outsourcing their thesis writing, it is necessary to consider a combination of individual and environmental factors. The research concludes by offering recommendations for appropriate policy development to address this issue.
