مقالۀ پژوهشی حاضر حول محور این پرسش اصلی سامان گرفت که دینداری فردی چه نقشی در پتانسیل اعتراض سیاسی دارد. ذخیرۀ دانشی قدمای علوم اجتماعی در بسیاری از دیدگاه‌های جامعه‌شناختی دلالت بر این پاسخ داشت که چون دین نقشی توجیهی یا حمایتی از سنت‌های حاکم و نظم موجود را دارد، پس پتانسیل اعتراض سیاسی را کاهش می‌دهد. باوجود‌این، برخی دانش‌پژوهان علوم اجتماعی در سال‌های اخیر استدلال کرده‌اند که دین و دینداری می‌تواند از راه‌های مختلف و از طریق کانال‌های متنوعی بر بسیج سیاسی و رفتار اعتراضی تأثیر بگذارد. این کانال‌های مختلف، یا مکانیسم‌هایی که از طریق آن‌ها دین و دینداری می‌تواند بر رفتار اعتراضی تأثیر بگذارد، در مقالۀ حاضر تشریح گردیده و سپس، با تفکیک دینداری به دو بُعد اصلی «اعتقادات دینی» و «مناسک مذهبی»، استدلال‌هایی نظری برای معقول‌سازی دو فرضیۀ متعارض ارائه شد. اول، اعتقادات دینی پتانسیل اعتراض سیاسی فرد را کاهش می‌دهد. دوم، مشارکت در مناسک مذهبی باعث افزایش پتانسیل اعتراض سیاسی می‌شود. درنهایت، فرضیات مزبور با داده‌های پیمایشی برآمده از نمونۀ 200نفری از افراد 18 سال به بالای ساکن در شهر تهران مقابله شد تا میزان برازش تجربی‌شان آشکار شود. نتایج تحقیق در مجموع دلالت بر رد تجربی فرضیات تحقیق داشته و نشان داد که پتانسیل اعتراض سیاسیِ پاسخ‌گویان نمونۀ تحقیق، مستقل از دینداری‌شان بوده است.
