Social exclusion is one of the key concepts in the field of social sciences and social policy-making that occurs when individuals, due to the lack of social, cultural, and civil rights, are unable to fully participate in society and establish effective communication with other members of it. Residents of marginalized areas around cities are among the main victims of this phenomenon. The present study aimed to identify the feelings of marginalized residents regarding social exclusion. For this purpose, a qualitative method and interview tools were used. The participants in this study were 20 residents of Morteza Gerd neighborhood located in District 19 of Tehran, who were selected through theoretical sampling. The resulting data were examined and analyzed using the content analysis technique. The research findings identified four main categories related to social exclusion in this area: a sense of stigma, economic inequality and low levels of social welfare, security problems and crime, and finally, changes in social structure and relations. The interpretation of the data showed that social exclusion among residents, along with isolation and lack of social interactions, traps them in a vicious cycle of poverty and a sense of relative deprivation. Residents of marginalized areas, especially in Morteza Gerd, have a deep experience of social exclusion, which is accompanied by a sense of stigma, insecurity, poverty and social isolation. These conditions not only limit their social interactions, but also reproduce a persistent cycle of deprivation and inequality.
