چگونگی ارتباط میان دین با خودکشی، از دیرباز مورد بررسی و کاوش دانش‌پژوهان علوم اجتماعی، به‌ویژه جامعه‌شناسان قرار گرفته است. در مقالۀ حاضر، با مروری بر ادبیات نظری و تجربی موجود در این حوزۀ پژوهشی، نخست سازوکارهای ارتباطی میان دو متغیر دین و خودکشی تشریح شده و سپس فرضیۀ اصلی تحقیق با داده‌های ثانویۀ مربوط به ایران از طریق تحلیلِ تطبیقی درون‌کشوری با واحد تحلیل استان مورد ارزیابی تجربی قرار گرفته است.
یافته‌های این پژوهش نشان داد که فرضیۀ اصلی موجود در دیدگاه‌های نظری جامعه‌شناسانه مبنی بر این‌که «دین اثر محافظتی یا کاهشی در برابر خودکشی دارد»، در بافت جامعۀ مسلمان ایران نیز کاملاً مورد تأیید تجربی قرار می‌گیرد. به سخن دقیق‌تر، هنگامی‌که تأثیرات سه متغیر تأثیرگذار بر خودکشی در سطح سیستمی یعنی توسعۀ اقتصادی-اجتماعی، انسجام خانوادگی و نابسامانی اجتماعی کنترل شدند، تأثیر خالص دین بر خودکشی در استان‌های ایران به‌طور قابل‌توجهی کاهشی بوده که دلالت بر این واقعیت داشته که دین تأثیر قابل‌توجه محافظتی آن بر خودکشی داشته است. این یافته، کاملاً بر تأثیر خالص و مستقل دین بر خودکشی در استان‌های ایران دلالت دارد و حمایتی تجربی برای این گزاره انگاشته می‌شود که دین می‌تواند از راه ارتقای رویارویی با ناملایمات زندگی، نقش یک سپر یا محافظ را در برابر خودکشی بجای آورد و بدین‌وسیله، خطر خودکشی را کاهش دهد.
