نسل نخست جامعه‌شناسان دین، بینش‌های موثری در مورد جایگاه دین در جوامع صنعتی یا سرمایه‌داری ارائه کردند، اما آن‌ها معمولاً مسائل اجتماعی را نادیده می‌گرفتند. وارثان آن‌ها نیز نسبتاً کم به مسائل اجتماعی توجه کرده‌اند. اما بحث‌های مربوط به ظهور جامعه پساصنعتی یا سرمایه‌داری متأخر نشان می‌دهد که ممکن است دین دست‌خوش تغییراتی باشد که آن را به ابزاری با اهمیتِ روزافزون برای تعریف مسائل اجتماعی و پاسخ‌گویی به آن‌ها تبدیل کند. در همین حال، دین ممکن است خود نیز بیشتر به مسئله‌ای اجتماعی تبدیل شود. مفهوم «خودسامان شدن» جورج زیمل در فرهنگ مدرن، ما را در فهم رابطه متغیر میان دین و مسائل اجتماعی یاری می‌کند.
